Hjörtur graduated from the University of Iceland Faculty of Medicine in 2010 and worked as a candidate and department physician at Akureyri Hospital until spring 2012.

He moved to Denmark and specialised in gynaecology at Odense Hospital after shorter stops in surgery and anesthesiology.

During his specialist training, he has been active in clinical work in healthcare facilities throughout Iceland and Norway, as well as working on various shifts in diverse departments all over Denmark.

He completed his specialization in obstetrics and gynaecology in spring 2019 and was subsequently employed on the University Hospital's general gynaecology team, focusing on bleeding problems and muscle nodules. He was also a member of the hospital's multidisciplinary team on trans issues and treatment.

After moving to Iceland, he has also increasingly dealt with issues and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and symptoms of menopause.
